Green Paper

The Government has written a discussion paper on how New Zealand can better protect abused, neglected and disadvantaged children.

The paper proposes a number of ideas on how things might change to improve the situation for vulnerable children. It also asks a series of questions about what sort of changes might be needed.

The paper is organised under four main headings – Share Responsibility, Show Leadership, Make Child-Centred Policy Changes, Make Child-Centred Practice Changes.

The Green Paper is an opportunity for the public, individuals and organisations, to have a say about what they think the priorities are and what they would like to see happen to improve the situation for children in New Zealand.

How do you have a say?

You can send in a submission. These need to be received by 28 February 2012.

When providing a submission, you may answer the questions raised in a variety of ways. Consider
providing some of the following:

  • Your thoughts on what you think needs to happen. What is your vision/wish for the future?
  • Examples of things you think already exist and are working well.
  • Stories from your community or experience that help illustrate the issues that need to be addressed or show how things can work.

We have been attending community meetings and discussions about the Green Paper as well as holding workshops with members about their views and ideas.  From this we have begun to summarise what we consider to be the key points.  You might want to include some of these, or build on these for your own submissions.

You can read our submissions paper here.
