DisengAGEd is a day-long conference that will bring together young people ages 16-24 of different backgrounds, to look into the reasons why youth are not participating in the voting process, and how to get them engaged in civil society, which is particularly important in post-quake Christchurch. This will involve key speakers, activities and an intention to solve the problem of low youth participation in politics. MPs, local body councillors and academics will be present to listen and action any outcomes of the conference. We are inviting students from high schools to attend this conference, as we have room for 30 high school students: eager students with ideas, who want to engage in politics, or who are truly disengaged from politics.

Gear Up! is about taking an enthusiastic and willing group of people, young and old, and practically helping our community.  The primary purpose of this project is about getting involved in our community, sharing resources, and using our time to help the people living around us. Secondly the aim of this project is to inspire youth to use whatever skills and resources they have to help others around them, so that our future leaders are compassionate, resourceful and hard working. What I am picturing is a large scale working bee. People, community groups or organisations tell us what they need, or the odd jobs they have, that we can help with. I will pair up workers with a job or a need that they can help with for a weekend. These jobs could include a range of things; from cleaning windows, picking up rubbish, painting fences, weeding, fixing things to organising and playing a sports game, playing cards and singing songs at a nursing home. So let’s gear up and get involved. Gear up! will be held on the 26th and 27th of May at 8:30am-5:30pm (Saturday), 12pm-5:30pm (Sunday). The meeting point is at Christian Fellowship Upper Hutt, 16-22 Lane Street. The times to meet are. The actual  activities will take place around different areas in Upper Hutt. Fore more information contact Ashton Lindsay or 027 323 7052.
